Explanation:

Gandhiji chided the lawyers for over-charging the poor peasants. When the peasants were so poor and crushed, it was inhuman to charge heavy fees from them. Gandhiji's selfless service and devotion to the cause of the peasants put the lawyers to shame.

The most important aspect for Gandhi in the Champaran Movement was:

  • The European panters had forced the farmers of Bihar to grow only Indigo on their lands.
  • This has led to two problems. Firstly, the Indigo cultivation on fields leads to the depletion of the soil's nutrients in an alarming manner and the farmers were banned to plant anything other than Indigo which led to the lack of nutrients in their fields forcing them to use excessive fertilizers.
  • Secondly, the farmers were not even allowed to grow crops for their own use. They could only grow Indigo.
  • Gandhi wanted to fight for the basic rights of these uneducated and unaware farmers who the British had exploited excessively.
