Mahatma Gandhi started a historical Civil Disobedience Movement by launching the Salt March or Dandi March or Dandi Satyagraha (as it was referred ) from Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad ,Gujarat  to the town of Dandi located near Surat coast in Gujarat. The march started on 12th March 1930 and lasted till 6th April in the same year.

The movement was in protest against the exorbitant tax levied by the British  on salt.

The salt march which is also known as Dandi march was led by Mahatma Gandhi against the tax laws implemented on salt by the british. This movement was started with around 100 people from Sabarmati Ashram to the sea coast at dandi. On the way many people joined in this march. At last there were around 50000 people. It covered nearly 240 miles (385 km). It was a 24 day march. It is considered as non violent civil disobedient movement.
