Raipur : The Chhattisgarh government has announced construction of a multi-storeyed building, which will house a library, an emporium and portraits of Mahatma Gandhi, to mark his visit to Raipur, now the state capital, in 1920.
The building, to be constructed at a cost of Rs.20 million, will come up in the Kankali Para area, on a 1,560 sq metre piece of land. Mahatma Gandhi visited here during his trip to the area Dec 20, 1920 to build up the movement against British rule.
Officials said the government sanctioned Rs.5 million to begin the construction work on a war-footing.
The multi-storeyed structure will house a library and an emporium as well the state-run Chhattisgarh Khadi Gramodyog Board where khadi-made products will be sold at comparatively cheaper prices.
The building will have a wide collection of various portraits and sketches of Gandhi during his freedom struggle movement.
The state government’s decision for a massive building in Raipur is inspired by a long-pending demand of freedom fighters and Gandhians of the state.
