Rajeev Gandhi, the then Prime Minister of India launched the Ganga action plan on 14 Jan. 1986 with the goal of doing away with pollution, improving water quality, treating and diverting domestic sewage and present toxic and industrial chemical wastes from identified grossly polluting units from entering the river Ganges. It also aimed at:
• Controlling non-pollutants being thrown into the river
• Research and Development to conserve the biotic, diversity of Ganges and enhance its productivity.
• Implementing a new sewage treatment technology
• Rehabilitate soft-shelled turtles
• Recover resources and use aquaculture for revenue
• Set an example for other river action plans.
