The river Ganga originates in the Himalayas from the place called Gangotri. Its origin is from a glacier. After traversing the greater part of the Himalayas as rapids in the gorges, it comes to plains at Haridwar in Utterakhand. It enters U.P., flows through Bihar, Jharkahnd and forms delta on reaching Bengal or West Bengal. One arm of the river Ganga forms Hugli river which flows through Kolkata and joins sea. Another arm forms the river Padma and flows in Bangaladesh creating the largest Mangrove swamp of the world called Sunderban. The river Padma joins the arm of the river Brahmaputra which is called Jumna in Bangladesh. The combined river thus formed is called Meghna. This Meghna river joins sea in Bangladesh.
