GANGA RIVER BASIN

The central part of the northern plains is watered by the river Ganga and it's tributaries. This is why it is called 'Ganga river basin'. The states that are the part of Ganga river basin are Uttar Pradesh, bihar and West Bengal.

The Ganga originates from the Gangotri glacier as the river bhagirathi. The Bhagirathi close down up to Devprayag and joins the river alkananda to become the Ganga. On its journey from mountains to the sea the Ganga is joined by many tributaries such as Ghagra, Gomti, Gandak, Kosi, Yamuna, Chambal, Betwa and Son.

The main tributary of the Ganga is the river Yamuna. It joins the Ganga at prayagraj. The meeting point of the Ganga and Yamuna is known as Sangam.

The Ganga river and its tributaries bring a large amount of alluvium to the Ganga river basin. This makes this basin very fertile. The last part of Ganga journey is through West Bengal. Here it moves slowly and splits into many distributaries.

The Hooghly is one of the main distributaries of Ganga. The city of Kolkata is located on its river bank. One distributary of the Ganga enters Bangladesh where it is called Padma river.
