Gas can be compressed into a smaller volume but a solid cannot be. Could you explain. Why?

because there is less space between solid particle

Gases can be compressed into smaller volume as it have a very high intermolecular spaces between the attoms / molecules
but in solid the molecules/atoms are tightly packed so they are incompressible
