Gas is compressed slowly and isothermally at 300K from 1 bar to 8 bar. Calculate the work done using the given state of equation. (B = -5.397 X 10-6 m3 /mol) (note: volume at each stage should be near to the ideal gas volume)
/ = 1 + /

Given:

P_1 = 1 bar

P_2 = 8 bar

Temperature = 300K

To find:

Work done

Explanation:

The process is an isothermal and reversible process

∴ for an isothermal and reversible process:

work done = - nRT ln\frac{P_1}{P_2}

Considering n = 1 mole

Substituting R = 8.314 J(mol/K)

W = - 1\times 8.314\times 300 ln\frac{1}{8}

    =5,185.4418 J  = 5.185 kJ

As it can be seen from the pressure values that the gas is compressed ;

∴ work done = 5.185 kJ
