Acid rain: when sulfur dioxide and nitrogen oxide are converted to sulfuric acid and nitric acid when mixed with precipitation water, it falls as acid rain. The natural source is emissions from volcanoes, bacterial action, lighting.

They cause weathering and erosion of buildings, effects on fish population and damage to crops and vegetation.

Forests can be destroyed when the acidic water destroys soil nutrients and damages roots. This leads to loss of leaves and needles. The acidic rainwater reduces soil fertility by increasing acidity. This lowers agricultural productivity by reducing the types of crop that can grow. Acid rain leaches magnesium and calcium from soil and damage leaves. Eventually, Al, Mn and heavy metals such as Fe and Cd come into solution and may reach toxic concentrations, causing damage to troo roots. This decreases the capacity of the tree to take up water and nutrients.
