Answer:

Swachh Bharat programme has produced remarkable results in some aspects, while in some parts it still has a long way to go -

In 2015, a UNICEF Report mentioned that as many as 524 million (52.4 crore) people [1] in India are forced to defecate in open due to lack of sanitation infrastructure

Another 2015 report [2] by UNICEF and World Health Organization also classified country’s progress in reducing open defecation as “moderate” and cited that in India there has been “very little change in last 20 years”

Please take a moment to process this information and its enormity. Most of us who are privileged enough to be reading this article in English on our laptop or smartphone may not even realize that even after 67 years of independence, 52 crore people or more than 60% of our population did not have access to basic amenities like toilets

Swachh Bharat Mission addressed this issue head-on and started building sanitation infrastructure in mission mode. Government’s relentless focus ensured that sanitation coverage started improving dramatically year after year

As per economic survey 2017-18, only 39% population had access to toilets in 2014. By January 2018, this number had rapidly surged to 76% [3]

By the time of writing this answer (August 2018), the sanitation coverage is about to touch 90%. Swachh Bharat Mission has so far delivered remarkable progress where in just 4 years -

80 million (8 crore) toilets were constructed

4 lakh Villages, 423 districts and 19 States / Union Territories were declared Open Defecation Free

Please take another moment to process this information now - 8 crore toilets constructed within 4 years

This means that more toilets were built in 4 years of current government than in 67 years of all previous governments in independent India put together. Status and progress of this project can be tracked in real time on Swachh Bharat Mission dashboard

Val Curtis, the Director of London School of Hygiene who has been involved in the program, called it the world’s most successful Behavior Change campaign [4]

In another project under Swachh Bharat initiative, Railways Ministry has installed 1,25,000 bio-toilets in train coaches. Fitted under the train lavatories, they prevent human waste from falling onto the tracks

Jointly developed by engineers of Indian Railways and DRDO, these are modern technology mechanisms which convert human waste into water and gases. Gases are released into atmosphere and water is discharged onto tracks

This initiative will go a long way in improving the hygiene and cleanliness of railway tracks across the country

The planned target of Swachh Bharat Mission is to make India 100% Open Defecation Free by October 2019. If the project continues progressing as planned, then by next year, India would have provided sanitation infrastructure to its entire population. It would be a huge milestone in resolving one of the large but grass-root problems affecting India

In another initiative, urban development ministry has implemented door to door waste collection in some cities so that residents don’t throw around the garbage in unauthorized places across the city [5]

Annual survey of cleanliness and city rankings has been initiated which motivates city municipalities to compete with each other and continuously improve their rankings in cleanliness [6]

Some places of worship in Punjab, Kerala, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Jharkhand have implemented environment friendly ways to process flowers and wet waste from kitchens [7]

The NMCG (National Mission for Clean Ganga) project under Swachh Bharat has recorded significant progress too. As per the published data, 12,000 MLD (million litres a day) of sewage is generated in the Ganga basin [8]

In May 2014, there were 31 treatment plants with a capacity of only 485 MLD

By 2018, treatment capacity is increased 10 times to 4,000 MLD

Another 94 projects, with a treatment capacity of 1,900 MLD are under way

However, even after completion of these 94 projects, we would still be only half way through in cleaning Ganga.

Improving cleanliness across the country is a humongous task and requires changes in -

government processes and

people behavior

Swachh Bharat still has a lot of ground to cover but above data shows promising improvements in both the above aspects.
