Toffees given to friend= 1/5*x=x/5

Remaining toffees= x-x/5= 4x/5

Toffees given to brother=1/3*4x/5 = 4x/15

Remaining toffees= 4x/5-4x/15= 8x/15

8x/15=24

x=45
