This makes a right angled triangle,
By pythagorus theorem,
8 { }^{2}  + 15 {}^{2}  = hypotenuse {}^{2}

64 + 225 = hypotenuse {}^{2}
289 = hypotenuse {}^{2}
17km=hypotenuse

17km is the distance between his starting point and final point.

Answer:

let the distance between the starting point and final point be x.

(hypotenuse)²= (base)²+(altitude)²

(x)²=(15km)²+ (8km)²

(x)²= 225km²+ 64km²

(x)²= 289km²

x= √289km²

x =17km
