Given:

Quantity of milk bought = 20 liters

Amount = ₹400

To find:

Liters of water added to the milk, so that by selling the mixture at cost price, Gautam can make 25% profit.

Solution:

We will assume that water is available free of cost.

If Gautam wants to make 25% profit:

25% profit = 25/100 * 400 = ₹100

1 litre of milk costs  ₹400/ 20 =  ₹20

To make a profit of  ₹100 he would have to replace 100/20 = 5 litres of milk with water.

Therefore, Gautam must add 5 litres of water to make a profit of 25%.

Given : Gautam buys 20 litres of milk for ₹400.

To Find : How many litres of water should be added to it, so that by selling the mixture at cost price, he can make 25% profit?

Solution:

Cost price of Milk = Rs 400

MIlk  =  20 Litre

Cost price per litre = 400/20 = Rs 20

Profit to make = 25 %

Profit = (25/100)400 = Rs 100

Selling Price = 400 + 100 = Rs 500

Selling Price per liter = Cost Price Per litre = Rs 20

Mixture to be Sold = 500/20   = 25 Litre

Milk available = 20 litre

Water to be added =  25 - 20   = 5 Litre

5  liters of water should be added to it
