Gautama Buddha was born in a rich, noble family in Lumbini in the 6th century B.C. At the age of
sixteen, he married a beautiful cousin, named Yasodhara and until he was twenty nine, he lived the life
of an Indian nobleman-the life of luxury and material comfort. Then he suddenly became discontented
as he felt that the life he had been living was not a real life. He wanted to find out the meaning and
purpose of being alive. With this intention he left his kingdom, wife and son and began to lead an
ascetic life. But soon, he left that life and wandered alone. At last he came to Bodh Gaya and sat under
an enormous pipal tree, now known as the Bodhi tree. There he had a kind of vision which is known as
enlightenment and he got all the answers to his question
(meaning translation of Bengali)
