ge hit III - Around The World THE REMOTE ISLANDS Anisland is a body of land surrounded by water. Continents are also surrounded by water, but because they are so big, they are not considered islands. Depending on the size and geographical condition of the island it may or may not be inhabited. Given below is a list of remote islands from around the world that are exquisite in their own ways. Match the name and photos given in column A with the correct description given in Column B. COLUMNA COLUMN B 1. Jan mayen 1.) The name translates to mean "Big Island". it is now owned by the National Trust of Scotland. In 1912 the island was evacuated because of the violent sea and related dangers. It is a home to many seabirds like Puffins, Black- legged Kittiwakes and many more. It is popular among rock climbers. 2. Wrangle island 2.) A Volcanic Island, in which either the armed forces or those who work in the metrological institute of Norway live. The island is 373km big and has glaciers, ice caps, lava cliffs, lakes and beaches full of pebbles and lava sand. It is a natural reserve and a breeding site for seabirds like the Northern Fulmar, Little Aucks etc. 3. Mingulay 3.) Called Halvmåneøya in Norwegian, this island was the place of an incredible survival story of Russian sailors, chronicled in a book called "Four Against the Arctic" by David Roberts. This 12km² island is made of Dolerite rock and is uninhabited by humans. Penguins, Antarctic terns, Kelp gulls, seals and Whales can be easily spotted. _Jan Mayen 4. Tristan da cunha 4.) This Russian island is a World Heritage Site. It is also believed to be the last place to have housed the wooly Mammoth before its extinction, Made out of metamorphic rocks, it has mountains as high as 500m above sea level. Abundant with flora and fauna it is a protected natural reserve and has no human population. 5. lle aux aigrettes 5.) Made purely out of coral limestone, islet (small island) is a thing of extreme beauty. Barely a kilometer off the coast of Mauritius, this is a prime example of reintroduction of endemic species like the Diospyro Egrettarum, a tree which was once present in a large measure on the islet. It is one of the most popular tourist destinations. 6.Half moon island 6.) This Island has a volcanic origin, is a British Overseas Territory with a population of only 250 people, and it has its own constitution. Abound with many beautiful flora and fauna it is a protected area. The most populated area of this island is referred to as the "Edinburgh of the Seven Seas" . It was discovered by a Portuguese sailor, after whom the island has been named. 36
