  • In Greek nema means thread and helmins means worms.

  • They are bilaterally symmetrical.

  • These are triploblastic and pseudocoelomates.

  • Nervous system is ladder like.

  • Sexes are unisexual and always show sexual dimorphism.

  • They are triploplasic

  • Pseudo coelom is present.

  • They are parasitic worms

  • Body is unsegmented.

  • Examples = Ascaris, Ancylostoma, Wuchereria.

Characteristics of phylum nematoda :-

  1. Nematoda is also called Nemathelminthes. They carries three germ layers ( endoderm, ectoderm and mesoderm ) and therefore, said to be triploblastic.
  2. They are said to bilaterally symmetrical, i.e. both right and left of its body is said to be a mirror image of each other and are exactly same.
  3. They carries a flexible cuticle outside thier body.
  4. Some of the nematoda lives in soil and water, whereas most of these organisms are parasitic in nature.
  5. They don't have a respiratory and circulatory system.
  6. They have separate genders, i.e. they are unisexual and the female are involved in the production of eggs.
  7. Examples - Wuchereria ( also called Filarial Worms ), Ascaris, etc.
  8. These parasitic organisms are known to cause a disease called elephantiasis in which leg swells of a patient.
