The general characteristics are:

1.plant body: it is sporophyte and defferentiated into stem ,leaves,and roots.

2.Gametophyte:it is small but independent stage in life cycle.

3.sex organs:they are multicellular and jacketed like those of bryophytes -male antheridia female archegonia

4.external water:a thin film of external water is required for swimming of male gamete up to archegonia.

5.vascular tissues: vascular tissues ,xylem and phloem ,appear for the first time in pteridophyta.

6.seeds:seeds are absent
