Lord Wellesley introduced the Subsidiary Alliance in India .

MORE INFO :

↪ Subsidiary alliance was a treaty signed by the British with many rulers and the British expanded their political empire using the above policy .

The principles of Subsidiary Alliance are as follows :-

➡ The Indian rulers who accepted it had to maintain the British army at their own cost .

➡ The rulers cannot keep relation with any other foreign powers except the British .

➡ The rulers should allow a British spy to be kept in their palace .

➡ The rulers almost lost their Independence by accepting British as the supreme power .

➡ The rulers promised not to enter into any alliance / treaty and wage wars against the British .

This policy was accepted by the Indians who though that they would lose to the British in case of a rebellion / war and hence they wanted to gain the security of the British at the cost of independence .

↪ Some other policies of expansion used by the British were Doctrine of Lapse and the pretext of alleged misrule ( which helped British to annex Awadh ) .
