Yes, we do add some drops of dilute acid to an water (electrolyte)during electrolysis.

The reason behind this is that,

Distilled water is a bad conductor of electricity due to absence of any ions in it.

Thus, adding few drops of acid furnishes ions in water, which help in easy conduction of electricity during electrolysis to carry on our experiment without any problem.

E.g. HCl→{H₂O}→(H+)[aq] + (Cl-) [aq]

These ions help in the conduction of electricity.
