If the cocoon is not boiled, it will continue to grow and mature inside the cocoon. After sometime, the larva will grow to become a silkworm or a moth and cannot give silk.

EXPLANATION:

Cocoon is boiled in water to kill the larva so that soft silk thread can be obtained. The flue holding silk thread in the shape of cocoon is dissolved in hot water so that it can give a continuous flow of silk thread which will not be available if the cocoon is not boiled and left as it is.
