Generally the ionic compounds have high melting points.
Give detail answer.
Answers
This is because of the strong attractive electrostatic forces holding the oppositely charged ions together and a large number of ionic bonds in the crystal lattice. These require a lot of thermal energy to overcome and hence have both high melting and boiling points.
Why do ionic compounds have high melting points?
Ionic compound have high melting as well as high boiling point temperature because,
The bond is formed between a metal and a non metal i.e., two oppositely charge elements( cations and anions)
Thus, this would increase the force of attraction between them which holds them tightly, hence these forces cannot be destroyed easily. (Ex. NaCl, MgCl, etc..)
Thus ionic compounds have high melting and boiling point temperature.(high temp. Is required to break their force of attraction) ..
Hope u understood my point..
Thanku
