Five computer generations:

• Nowadays, generation includes both hardware and software, which together make up an entire computer system.

• There are five computer generations known till date. Each generation has been discussed in detail along with their time period and characteristics.

• 1940 – 1956: First Generation – Vacuum Tubes. These early computers used vacuum tubes as circuitry and magnetic drums for memory.

• 1956 – 1963: Second Generation – Transistors.

• 1964 – 1971: Third Generation – Integrated Circuits.

• 1972 – 2010: Fourth Generation – Microprocessors.
