Generation in computer terminology is a change in technology a computer is/was being used. Initially, the generation term was used to distinguish between varying hardware technologies. Nowadays, generation includes both hardware and software, which together make up an entire computer system.

There are five computer generations known till date. Each generation has been discussed in detail along with their time period and characteristics. In the following table, approximate dates against each generation has been mentioned, which are normally accepted.

Generations of computers is the term used to describe how computers have changed and evolved over the years both in hardware and software and also the way we use them to perform different tasks. There are 5 main generations of computers.

1. First generation (1940s-1950s) Vacuum tube.
2. Second generation (1950s-1960s) Transistor.
3. Third generation (1960s-1970s) Integrated circuit.
4. Fourth generation (1970s-present) Microprocessor.
5. Fifth generation (The present and the future) Artificial intelligence.
