circular DNA

Most prokaryotes carry a small amount of genetic material in the form of a single molecule, or chromosome, of circular DNA. The DNA in prokaryotes is contained in a central area of the cell called the nucleoid, which is not surrounded by a nuclear membrane.

What are Prokaryotes?

The Prokaryotes are organisms without well defined nucleus and lack some organelles generally smaller than eukaryotes.

Examples are some bacteria.

As prokaryotes are small and lack nucleus and has a small amount of genetic molecules in them they are contained in the nucleoid.

What is a nucleoid?

Nucleoid is an irregular shaped organelle in the prokaryotic cell. It is not a membrane bound organelle and has a direct contact to the the cytoplasm. These nucleoid hold the majority of genetical molecules in it. The genetics in nucleoid are generally coiled tight. Nucleoids are generally very small.
