Two Gentlemen of Verona' set in the city of Italy after the war gives a heart-rending account of two small brothers who assume the role of parents for their sixteen-year-old sister suffering from tuberculosis of the spine. The boys of just twelve and thirteen years old have a willingness to work and maturity far beyond their age which intrigues the narrator Cronin. The war had shattered their once cultured, secure life and thrown them on the streets.
Though India is a free country, the situations in many parts of India are none better than Verona. Like Nicola and Jacopo, there are hundreds of thousands of children who instead of carrying the weight of school bag on their shoulders carry the weight of running their family to save their dear ones from a crisis. While traveling if you happen to stop at a road-side dhaba, you are very likely to come across 'Ramu' or 'Chotu' who is working as a child labor toiling sixteen to eighteen hours a day. His family is too poor to support him and he is forced to work in that small dhaba washing dishes in the chill of night and serving hot tea to the customers.
A similar sight can be observed at any roadside puncture repairing mechanic shop. It;s so common to see an undernourished boy in his vest dexterously pumping air into tubes and doing odd jobs. His impoverished situation tells all about him. They are in no way less commendable than Nicola and Jacopo who provide a hope for the society. The only difference is that these Indian children provide hope for their family by adding to their income., though it's a shame for an Independent country like India to have children wasting their childhood like that. Nevertheless, they always leave a question for us whenever we see them.
