Spirogyra is a genus of filamentous charophyte green algae of the order Zygnematales, named for the helical or spiral arrangement of the chloroplasts that is characteristic of the genus. It is commonly found in freshwater habitats, and there are more than 400 species of Spirogyra in the world

The genus is Spirogyra.
It may have different species. Some of them are :
1. brunnea
2. calospora
3. cardinia
4. buchetti
5. bullata
6. calcarea
7. caroliniana
8. californica
Addition information :
i) Spirogra belongs to the family which is named as Chlorophyceae.
ii) It is a green algae as chlorophyll a and b are present excessively in them.
iii) They have a cell wall which has 2 layers - inner one which is composed of cellulose and the outer is made of pectose.
iv) The gametes that are found in Spirogyra do not possess flagella and both the male as well as female gametes have similar size.
