Transactions are replicated to 3 nodes within the primary region selected for creating the storage account. This replication is done synchronously.

The transaction is also lined up for asynchronous replication to another secondary region.  

This is done to make data durable by replicating it to 3 more storage nodes there.  

Geo Redundant Storage (GRS)  is enabled when storage account is created.
