Geographical information : Phodong Monastery is a Buddhist monastery in Sikkim, India. It is located 28 kilometres from Gangtok. It was founded by Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal

The monastery has a residence of approximately 260 monks and has a numerous collection of some ancient murals.The geographic coordinates are 27°24′46″N 88°35′02″E / 27.41278°N 88.58389°E.

Architectural information: It was built in the early 18th century but an older monastery had pre-existed the current one.

Current building early 18th century It was reconstructed by Sidkeong Tulku Namgyal, who was recognized as the reincarnation of his uncle, Sidkeong Namgyal, the abbot of the monastery.The line was to be continued by Palden Thondup Namgyal.

Architectural Information-  Phodang Monastery was built in the 18th century by Chogyal Gyurmed Namgyal and belongs to the Kargyupa sect. Phensang Monastery was built in 1721 by Lhatsun Jigmed Pawo, who was the third incarnation of Lhatsun Chenpo. In 1947 it was completely destroyed by a devastating fire but rebuilt again the following year. Labrang Monastery is famous for its architectural style with rich frescoes detailing the interiors of the monastery. Between Phodong and Labrang Monastery are the ruins of the third capital of Sikkim, Tumlong.
