A rock is an aggregate  (a whole formed by combining several separate elements) of one or more minerals but without definite chemical compositions of constituent of minerals. Rocks from which minerals are formed are known as ores .

Although more than 2800 types of minerals have been identified, only about 100 are considered as ore minerals
