A function f(x) is said to be even, if its value remains same, even if the value substituted for the variable is negative. That is, f(-x) = f(x).

  • When any given function is in such a way that the value obtained after plugging a negative value for the variable is the same as the starting function, it is said to be an even function.
  • Graphically or, geometrically, the graph of an even function is symmetric with respect to the y-axis.
  • Mathematically or algebraically, it is expressed as f(-x) = f(x).
  • On the other hand if f(-x) = - f(x), the function is said to be an odd function.
  • Examples of even functions are: f(x) = x², f(x) = cos(x), etc. While some examples of the odd functions are: f(x) = x³, f(x) = sin(x), etc.
