Gerund & Infinitive passage answer

The teacher expected the students to do lots of homework, but they complained about having to do so much work. When the teacher expressed concern about the situation, the students said that the assignments were boring, and this led them to avoid the work. The teacher said they should not avoid doing the work because it would cause them to do poorly on their tests. However, she also said she would try to make the assignments more interesting. She advised them to do the work if they expected on to pass the course. The students agreed to try harder. A few weeks later, the teacher and the students discussed the homework situation again. She reported that more students had managed to complete the work. The students hesitated to tell her that the assignments were still boring. They realized they just needed to do the assignments anyway.
