It’s a great question. Please allow me to tell you a little story. I told you already that I was living in India with my teacher. He was not really a teacher exactly. He had no fixed teaching, or practice, or dogma, but he SAW you so deeply that the game was up on hiding out in a sad story any more. I would say that he was the world’s first Awakening Coach. That is what I do too. I am a coach. I am not a guru, I am not a teacher, I am a coach.
After living with him for about a year, he asked me to go back to America and to “share the secret with my friends.” I wasn’t really quite sure what he meant.
I said, “What exactly do you want me to do?”
“Go back to America and tell people about this secret,” he replied. This was 21 years ago. I’ve been doing my best ever since.
I arrived in Seattle, where I had been living before, and I thought to myself, ‘Well, how do you start?’ Do you call up a friend and say, ‘I’m a guru now, would you like to come and sit at my lotus feet?’ It didn’t happen like that, but I did end up meeting a few friends here and there, and I told them I had been in India with this guy called Poonjaji, and some were interested, A few people came by, so we started to have small gatherings. After some months they grew in size, and I got other invitations to travel.
Okay. Now let’s wind forward a few months. I was invited to teach on Orcas Island. It is off the coast from Seattle, part of the San Juan Islands. A very nice woman invited me to her place. She had two houses, one in town, and one was very remote, on five acres, facing the west. She said to me, “I will stay in my house in town, and you can have Satsang and stay in the big house.” She invited people, and about eighty came and crammed into the living room.
Earlier that day I had gone into town. I realized that all the time I had been in India, I had not watched any movies. You didn’t get to access movies so much in India back then, so I stopped seeing any. I used to love movies before, and I hadn’t seen one in about 2 years. So I went to the video rental store, to find a film. But I was nervous. I didn’t want anything violent, or scary or psycho or weird. I was looking for a Disney kind of a film, to ease my way back in slowly. And then I found a film that looked perfect. It has Anthony Hopkins, I like him. It had a picture of a butterfly on the cover. And it had a very sweet, innocent title, ‘The Silence of the Lambs.’ So I said ‘I’d like to rent this film, please.’
So after all the people had gone, it was maybe ten o’clock, I was all alone in this big house. My hostess had also gone, back to her other house. I was totally alone in this big old wooden house, on a five acre lot, with very strong winds blowing outside. I took my very sweet innocent cozy children’s movie, and I put it into the VCR and I sat back to relax and watch.
