Gillian has two boxes, A and B, of equal mass. Box A contains thrice as much sand as Box B. The total mass of Box A and the sand in it is 3 kilograms 250 grams. The total mass of Box B and the sand in it is 1 kilograms 760 grams. Find the mass of each box when empty. Please give your answer in kilograms and grams.

let mass of sand in B be M and mass of sand in A be 3M let mass of boxes be m so we have that

m +3M=3250 grams

m+M = 1760

subtract

2M =1490

M=745 grams

put in equation

we get m

1760 -745

1015 grams or 1kg 15 grams
