Apical and intercalary meristem constribute to the growth in length while lateral meristem bring an increase in girth in maize.

As long as the lateral meristems continue to produce new cells, the stem or root will continue to grow in girth or diameter but after a point of time even the growth hormones stop their secretions so the growth in terms of length and height of the plant is limited not throughout the life.
