Traditional Methods of Irrigation

These are the methods of irrigation that were used in the earlier years. Even today some small farms in rural areas adopt these. Although they are cheaper than the modern methods, they are not nearly as efficient. They require human or animal labour to function. Some of these methods are,

1. Moat

Also called the pulley system, it involves pulling up water from a well or other such source to irrigate the land. It is an extremely time consuming and labour intensive system, but it is very cost efficient. Also, wastage of water is avoided when using a moat system of irrigation.

2. Chain pump

A chain pump consists of two large wheels connected by a chain. There are buckets attached to the chain. One part of the chain dips into the water source. As the wheel turns, the bucket picks up water. The chain later lifts them to the upper wheel where the water gets deposited into a source. And the empty bucket gets carried back down.

3. Dhekli

It is a system of drawing water from a well or such similar source. Here we tie a rope and bucket to a pole. At the other end, we tie a heavy stick or any other object as a counterbalance. And we use this pole to draw up water.

4. Rahat

So Rahat system of irrigation uses animal labour. Above the well, we tie a large wheel. An ox or cow would turn the wheel to draw the water from the well.

Irrigation is defined as the process through which a controlled amount of water is delivered to the plants in agricultural feilds at required time intervals.

Explanation:

Tere are several traditional method of irrigation such as:

  1. Moat: it is also known as pulley system in which water use to pull from a well  or other sorces such as lake or river to irrigate the land.
  2. Chain pump : A chain pump carries two large wheels, both connected with the help of chain and the chain is connected with the buckets.  the chain pump kept over a water source, as one end of chain dips in the water, the wheel turns and the bucket picks up the water. Water from the bucket then spilled to the feilds and the chain then lift up the wheel and bucket continues the process.
  3. Dhekli: In this process water was drawn from the well with the help of a rope and bucket. A rope and bucket use to tie with a pole, a heavy stick tied opposit eto the pole as a counterbalance and then pole used to draw up water.
  4. Rahat : Animal labour was used in rahat technique, in which a well used to tie a large wheel and an animal source such as ox or cow used to move the wheel in order to draw the water from the well.
  5. Check Basin Method: In this process the feilds used to divided into basins and connected to a small drain. the water is then flowed from their to the basins.
  6. Furrow irrigation: In this process crops were planted along the sides of the water sources in a row.
  7. Strip Irrigation: In this method feilds are divided into different size of strips. The construction of strips depends on the slope which makes it easy for irrigation.
  8. Basin Irrigation Method : In this method a raised platform use to creat around the bushes and tress, which are further connected to the drain.
  9. Joto: in this method human source is usd. a pole is used with have a upwad and downward movement, on ened of this pole is dip in water source attcjed with a bucket and one end is pulled by human.
