oxidation is addition of oxygen and removal of hydrogen
example:cu + o2 ⇒ 2cuo
            CL2 + H2O ⇒ HOCL + HCL
reduction is addition  of hydrogen and removal of  oxygen
example: CuO+H2 ⇒ Cu + H2O

Truly speaking reduction and oxidation occur in the same reaction.  That is why they are called red-ox reactions.

   2 H₂ + O₂  --> 2 H₂ O           Hydrogen is oxidized and Oxygen is reduced.
   4 Fe + 3 O
₂  -->  2 Fe₂ O₃     Iron is oxidized by oxygen to become Ferric oxide (rust)

In our body glucose (C
₆ H₁₂ O₆) is oxidized and we get energy and power from that chain of such reactions.  Hydrogen and carbon are oxidized.

        C
₆ H₁₂ O₆ + 6 O₂  ==>  6 H₂ O + 6 C O

   Here Manganese is reduced from higher oxidation state of 4 to 2.
           Mn O₂  + 4 H Cl   ==>  Mn Cl₂ + Cl₂ + 2 H₂ O

              Zn + 2 H Cl ===> Zn Cl₂ + H₂
          Here hydrogen is reduced and zinc is oxidized.

    2 Pb O₂ -> 2 Pb O + O₂   Here Lead is reduced from an oxidization state of 4 to 2.
