The Indian Rebellion of 1857 had diverse, political, economic, military, religious and social causes. The sepoys, a generic term used for native Indian soldiers of the Bengal Army derived from the Persian word sepāhī

The three main causes for the resentment of the sepoys against the British are:

1. The introduction of a new Enfield rifle to the Sepoys: In February 1857 The British issued the sepoys (Indian soldiers of Bengal army) with new gunpowder cartridges for the Enfield rifle. At the time when the Indian soldiers were provided with the rifles, a rumor spread around that the cartridges were manufactured from cow and pig fat. Therefore in order to load the Enfield required one to open the greased cartridge with the mouth.

2. The violation of Indian religious practices: the newly introduced rifles required one to open the greased cartridge with the mouth. This according to the Indian soldiers insulted the religious practices of both Hindu and Muslims. Therefore, to protect their religion, the Indian soldier began the rebellion which later spread in many parts of India.

3. The rebel soldiers were stripped in front of their colleagues and jailed. This followed the revolt by other sepoys.
