Answer: The preamble of the Indian constitution declares India as a democracy. Hence powers cannot be vested in a single person or organisation. Thus the role of the president was created. This post is said to have much less power than others but our late and beloved president APJ Abdul Kalam proved that wrong. The president exercises enough power to be able to reject decisions in the legislature part of the government.

This post is extremely important for the country. The president is not directly responsible to the people, whereas the prime minister is responsible to the parliament(who have been elected by the people). People that have been nominated by the president are also not allowed to participate in the elections. Hence it is important that the president is elected indirectly.
