⏩It consists of only one kinds of atoms.

⏩Element cannot be broken into two or more simpler substances by physical or chemical means.

⏩An element is a pure chemical substance made of same type of atom.

⏩An element is represented using symbols.

⏩An atom is the smallest unit that shows all the properties of an element. For example, an atom of iron shows all the properties of that metal.

COMPOUNDS -

⏩It consists of two or more elements that are chemically combined in a fixed proportion.

⏩The components of a compound cannot be separated by chemical and electrochemical methods.

⏩A compound contains atoms of different elements chemically combined together in a fixed ratio.

⏩A compound is represented using a formula.

The difference between elements and compounds is -

  1. Elements are made up of one mind or atom. They are pure and basic substances. Compounds contain multiple atoms sharing bonds with each other.
  2. Elements have specific atoms only while compounds may have one type of atom or multiple types of atoms.
  3. Elements have symbols for their representation. Compounds have formulas formed by combining the name of constituent elements of compounds.
  4. Elements are most basic and hence cannot be broken down. Compounds can be broken down into elements.
  5. Elements are limited in number while the count for compounds is huge.
  6. Example of element is aluminum, sodium etc. Example of compound is sodium silicate, aluminium hydroxide etc.
