Lava magma that reaches the earth surface is called lava. It maybe acidic or basic. Acidic lava is viscous, is lighter in colour and higher sillica content. Basic lava is non-viscous is darker in colour and has lower sallica content

It's pretty easy to be confused, but this is a chart about the characteristics of acid and basic lava.
*Acid lava is usually found in convergent (destructive) plate margins
Basic Lava
- Contains small amounts of silica (50%)
- Contains small amounts of silica (50%)
- Highly fluid
- Has a Low melting point
- Flows fast (20mph)
- Travels long distances (60 miles)
- Gently sloping cones
- Little explosive activity
- Shorter periods between explosions
- No alternating layers
Acidic Lava
- Contains large amounts of silica
- Highly viscous (sticky)
- Has a High melting point
- Flows slow
- Does not travel far
- Steep sided cones
- Very Explosive activity
- Longer periods between explosions
- Multiple layers of Ash and lava
