Porifera, commonly called sponges, are marine animals found in benthic zone of the ocean. The poriferans have the simplest body plan amongst the animal kingdom. They have cellular level of body organization and lacks nerve, muscle cells and a centralized gut. The development is indirect in the sponges. Their life cycle proceed through larva. During development the larva attaches itself to a substratum at the blastopore and the central cavity forms the beginning of the spongocoel. As the spongocoel grows the embryo becomes a simple asconoid sponge, called Olynthus. Olynthus is a short-lived stage in the development of some calcareous sponges.
