The clear lime water turns milky meaning that carbon dioxide has been produced. ... Sulfuric acid reacts with calcium carbonate to form calcium sulfate, carbon dioxide and water. H2SO4(aq)+CaCO3(aq)→CaSO4(s)+CO2(g)+H2O (l) Hydrochloric acid reacts with calcium carbonate to form calcium chloride, carbon dioxide and water.

CaCO3 (s) + H2SO4 (l) → CaSO4 (s) +H2O (l) + CO2 (g)

When calcium carbonate reacts with dilute sulphuric acid it gives calcium, water and carbon dioxide.

The Calcium sulphate which is formed is insoluble in acid and hence it creates a layer on the calcium carbonate and helps in protection.

This reaction stops after a given time, because as a calcium sulphate layer is formed there is no more calcium carbonate available to get reacted.
