Answer:

Flood refers to a condition when water from a water body or rain accumulates over an otherwise dry area, causing havoc and destruction. Floods can cause considerable damage to life and property. It is impossible to prevent floods, yet many methods can help prevent the damages caused due to them.

Humans are helpless against rains and downpour, but the construction of dams and reserves helps in containing water and preventing floods. Also, timely and proper construction of river banks and dams will help prevent the overflow of water thereby preventing floods. Planting trees in flood-prone areas will also help contain flood by a considerable level.

The term flood is used when water from a water body such as a river, lake, etc breaks the embankment and spreads over the plain area. Heavy rain in a river’s catchment area causes it to flood beyond its capacity. An over swelled river breaks its embankment and floods the plains, especially at the bends.

Flood is common in some of the parts of India during the monsoon. It causes large scale damage to life and property. Houses get submerged in water, making everyday normal living miserable. Acres of agricultural land also get flooded with water, causing severe damage to the crops and destabilizing the economy. Flood is a phenomenon that has no advantage whatsoever and is always a reason for the loss.
