During 15 the century there many regional powers raised. Like - Awadh, Rajput, Marathas. Yes, they also called the successor states, because they had the power to protest against British. British attacked many time on those States, but they never succeed because of their power, money, soldiers and unity. After many attacks British did deal with them, but never got the states personally.
