In the play The Merchant of Venice written by William Shakespeare Antonio is presented as a melancholic character whose reason of sadness is unknown. In the beginning he says that he himself doesn't know the reason for his sadness. Salanio and Salarino try to figure out the reason for his melancholy by giving the references of his ventures which were carrying merchandise to different countries, reference of love whether he has fallen in love and that is why he is melancholic. However all their efforts go in vain as they do not get to know the reason for his sadness.He is a totally opposite character of his friend Bassanio who is a very jolly person.
