The reason is that the pressure exerted by a liquid increases with its depth. Thus, as the depth increases, more and more pressure is exerted by water on the wall of the dam. to decrease the pressure...because we know that we can reduce pressure by increasing it's surface area. and also the pressure increases as the the depth increases. that's why the bottom of the dam are broad
