Helen Keller was born on 27 June, 1880 in the north-west Alabama city of Tuscumbia. Her father was a retired army captain and editor of a local newspaper. When Helen was nineteen years old, she suffered from a strange disease, possibly scarlet fever, which left her deaf and blind. She was an extremely intelligent child and tried to understand her surroundings through touch, smell and taste. By the time she was seven years old, she had learnt sixty hand gestures to communicate with her parents. With the help of her teacher, Anne Sullivan, she learnt the mutual alphabet and started communicating with finger spelling.Ā
