The Himalayas are the mountainous region between India and the Asian continent as a whole - the Indian tectonic plate is moving north colliding with the larger Asian plate, and at the point of collision, mountains are being pushed up above the point of collision (this is normal). The collision is somewhat recent (geologically speaking) and is active (ongoing).
Therefore the Himalayan plateau is rising higher than the usual case when two plates collide, and is actively rising.
Several of the highest mountains on earth are located in the Himalayas including Everest and K2.
