The War
Since war broke out in January 1943, Anne and her family had to live in hiding in an annex and Anne called it the secret annex. Life in the secret annex was completely different from her normal life.
Life in the secret annex
- The annex was very dirty in spit of cleaning and the space for 8 members was limited.
- The daily provisions were very limited so they could not wash regularly or wear clean clothes.
- There was no privacy.
- The residents of the secret annex were dwelling in fear of being arrested.
- They could not go outside the annex and had to maintain silence within the space.
- Slowly the residents were feeling depressed and anxious.
- By the end of 1943, as the tension of discovery had increased, the members became more silent and self-absorbed.
Anne received a small gift from her parents, a small red and white plaited diary on her thirteenth birthday which was on 12 June 1942.
During that time, she lived with her parents in Amsterdam, Netherlands. It was under the German army, so they had to live in fear of the anti-Jewish and the Nazis.
Later, on July 6, 1942, her family went into hiding. They brought little things with them, but Anne brought her red diary which she had named ‘Secret Annex’.
Anne filtered all her thoughts and the situation she went through in her diary for two years. She wrote about the war, her family, and two other families that she lived with.
