For India's freedom struggle, Many leaders were put in jail for long time, And Nehru was one amongst them . In "Animals in Prison" Nehru tells about the present conditions of animals. Nehru had great concern for the animals, and he enjoyed the presence of those animals.

Explanation:

  • Nehru explains in depth how he spent his time in cell isolation and waited patiently for the evening when the freedom of a brief walk past prison gate was permitted. It was the moment he could glimpse the magnificent Himalayas that shaped the Dehra Dun Gaol skyline.
  • He explains how many insects, bats, small animals and snakes have often converted their cells into homes or come in as a casual guest. He said he was pleased with the distraction that they offered instead of being frightened or repulsed.
  • He was not alone, while in solitary confinement, because others Insects and lizards visited his cell daily . He describes different times where a squirrel, "misled by his stillness", sits on his knee for a while and shakes off as soon as it is it realised with fright that Nehru was a living thing. He also describes how a fellow prisoner had 3 baby squirrels that needed to be fed with a fountain pen holder.
  • He learns that other animals are commonly found at different jails. As per Nehru, the pigeons are the most popular amongst them. Nehru had the opportunity to witness & hear  many different such the Koel, the brain fever birds, majestic kite, & eagle.
  • However, bat was the one animal that Nehru did not like. And there were also a number of bats, tiny and huge, that often flew almost hitting his face. At times,  Nehru would while away his time observing numerous colonies of ants which lived in the vicinity. Nehru also had a special dislike for centipedes; it is just not a dislike but also the fear of snake in particular. To his discomfort, Nehru had often snakes as visitors to his cell.
  • Nehru did not many animals that he had seen in Dehra Dun Gaol and one such animal was the Pangolin. This unusual, uncouth species is identified by Nehru as a cross between  a crocodile & a lizard, however with scales all over the body. It is known as "Bo" in local dialect, &  Nehru tells us that forest dwellers used to eat the Pangolin.
